Details: Real Kids Shades is a company with a mission to protect children’s eyes from the damaging effects of UV radiation. Many parents remember to protect their children’s skin from the sun, but many often don’t realize the damage sun can do to eyes. Real Kids Shades are real sunglasses, not toys, made just for kid’ faces. They are designed with shatterproof polycarbonate lenses and block 100% of UV rays.

Real Kids Shades are not accessories, they’re necessary gear.

IMAG0019editPersonal Experience: Real Kids Shades sent me a pair of their Xtreme Convertible shades. I had barely removed the sunglasses from the package and Xander was bouncing up and down trying to grab them from me! Once they were on his face, he was grinning ear to ear and pulling all sorts of “cool dude” poses around the house. Took me a few days to catch him on camera… he moves fast! ;)

I chose to go with the size for 7 to 12 year olds, even though he is only just shy of 3. They are a bit big on him, but they still conform to his head and keep out the rays. They also fit my 9 and 11 year old nieces. The padding along the inside frame creates a comfortable, custom fit.

The frames are made of a lightweight polymer called Xylex and the lenses are polycarbonate. They are incredibly sturdy. My son has pulled on them, sat on them, and otherwise beat them up… and not a scratch to be seen. Finger smudges and the occasional sticky food have all cleaned off easily.

This particular pair converts from traditional sunglasses to a sport-strap style of sunglasses. This adds a lot of versatility. The traditional sunglasses are great for everyday wear. The straps will allow him to keep a pair on when he is doing much more active things outdoors, like sports, biking, and sledding. The conversion process is incredibly simple… just push the button and pull gently to release the ear piece and snap in the strap. It takes literally seconds to swap back and forth.

The most important part of these sunglasses is that they are genuine protective gear… not toys or accessories that are just for looks. RKS provided me with a lot of great information on protecting children’s eyes. Now that I know that eyes cannot repair themselves from sun damage, it is very comforting to know that these sunglasses are FDA approved to prevent damage.

Pros: Styles kids will love! Provide 100% protection from UV-A and UV-B rays. FDA approved for protecting children’s eyes. Lead-free with no bisphenol A and no phthalates. Durable polycarbonate lenses. Lightweight, flexible, strong frames… built to last and hold up to kids. Some styles can be fitted with prescription lenses. Very reasonably priced. Available in a variety of sizes and sizes that will keep your child protected from day 1 until they’re 12 years old!

Cons: Some of the prices of the older kids’ models get a bit high in price, but keep in mind that a comparable pair of adult sunglasses would cost five times as much easily!
