Disclosure of Material Connection: I received one or more of the products or services mentioned below for free in the hope that I would mention it on my blog. Regardless, I only recommend products or services I use personally and/ or believe will be good for my readers. I am disclosing this in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission's 16 CFR, Part 255: "Guides Concerning the Use of Endorsements and Testimonials in Advertising."

Details: Zaggora sportswear is made from a patent pending, multi-layer fabric that is specifically designed to heat up the body to increase calorie burn when you are active. They are not just making this up to sell sportswear… these claims are backed by scientific study!

During 2011 and 2012, Zaggora commissioned research on Hotwear from ETScience, based at the University of Southern California, USA (“ETS Study”)**, and from the Chelsea School of Sport, University of Brighton in the UK (“UB Study”)***. Altogether, more than 120 women took part in the studies.

Our research shows that the use of a Zaggora top and bottom (“Zaggora Hotwear”) during exercise, at an appropriate level of intensity and while remaining well hydrated, may help to increase both body temperature generation and the rate of calorie burn.

The ETS Study first tested 30 subjects in Zaggora Hotwear and 30 subjects in standard exercise clothing and found that exercising in Zaggora Hotwear can lead to a statistically significant increase in energy expenditure as compared to standard exercise clothing: 6% on average and up to 18% depending on fitness level.

When testing a group of 10 subjects exercising at a constant speed, data revealed that subjects in Zaggora Hotwear burned 9.7% more calories than subjects in standard exercise clothing during 30 minutes of exercise

And it didn’t stop there! Even wearing the pants while resting could increase calorie burn. Read on:

The UB Study found that if Zaggora HotPants are worn in resting recovery after 30 minutes of exercise, they can lead to a 12.5% increase in energy expenditure in the 30-60 minutes after exercise.

Personal Experience: With all of the information above, I bet you’re as excited as I was to find out if they worked. Zaggora sent on a pair of their HotPants 2.0 for me to try for the purpose of this review. I could tell from the moment I picked up the package from my doorstep that these were no ordinary workout pants. They had heft!

The material used to make the pants is part neoprene. If you’ve ever worn a wetsuit, the sensation of putting these on will be familiar to you. They fit snugly and provided an instant slimming effect. You won’t hear me complaining about something that makes me look thinner… especially if it’s helping to make me actually thinner. I noticed right away that it squeaked and swooshed a bit when I moved. It got worse when I actually did my workout. This squeaking and swooshing did fade a little after a few washes.

I put my HotPants to the test in several ways: doing my everyday cleaning, going for walks with my son, doing aerobics, performing strength training routines, and working out on my cardio machines. In every case I had an increase in sweat production and I drank considerably more than usual… yet I didn’t feel significantly hotter. When I removed the pants, the moisture was visible on my legs. When I did workouts on my regular knit fitness pants it was rare for me to reach a point where my legs or pants were moist.

Washing the HotPants between workouts was a bit of a pain. (Zaggora recommends you do this immediately after your workout… though I allowed for the 30 minutes of resting based on the study I mentioned above.) They can only be hand-washed and laid out to dry.  They can’t be wrung out, because it could damage the fabric. This meant that there were a few occasions that my pants were still a bit damp when I went to start a workout the following day. This may not be a problem for someone that does their workouts on a particular schedule, but my workouts can be in the evening one day and move to early morning the next. I would need a few pairs to keep up with my schedule, and at nearly $100 a pair that’s just not an easy thing to accomplish!

Okay, now to the part you are waiting to hear. Did they work? Yes, yes, yes! With no actual effort over my usual workouts, I finally saw the tape measure reach a smaller number. It amounted to about an inch off of each of the major lower-body areas. For many people an inch may not seem significant, but for someone like me that struggles constantly against a poor metabolism, it is incredible! Because I know someone will ask, I do want to point out that I didn’t lose any weight.

So to sum it up: For those looking for a quick fix for weight loss, look elsewhere. You won’t lose weight just sitting around in these. They won’t do the work for you, but they will help you do it more efficiently. The cost may seem excessive for some, but consider all the gear you buy and how quickly it wears out. To me, the up-front cost here is balanced by long life from great construction. I will typically deduct at least half a star from my rating based on cost, but here is one of those times you get what you pay for. I would love to try one of their tops… I have some chest that could use a little reducing, too. ;)

Pros: They do what they promised. They are very well constructed of quality material that will last through many, many intense workouts. I loved the instant slimming effect when I put them on.

Cons: They do get you results, but the cost of replacing them as you lose weight could get quite pricey. Maybe it was do to my size, but they squeaked and swooshed a bit as I moved. Can only be hand-washed and cannot be tumble dried.
