Details: Guy Foubert was a passionate Belgian Chocolatier making handmade chocolate truffles in Sint-Niklaas, Belgium. In 1958, Guy and Liliane joined their names, both in marriage and in their company name creating Chocolaterie Guylian; a small, artisanal chocolate maker. Today, Guylian crafts the finest authentic Belgian chocolate truffles, selling them to chocolate lovers in Belgium and in more than 100 countries across the world.
Personal Experience: I was given a generous sampling of products from Guylian Belgian Chocolates to facilitate this review. The collection arrived in a large styrofoam cooler packaged within a box that clearly labeled it as fragile and edible contents. I must admit, they were placed on my doorstep with much more care than I usually see with my deliveries here!
I couldn’t believe how many goodies were packaged into that cooler! They included several gift-ready sizes of their signature truffles, dark chocolate truffles, and a sampler with white and milk chocolate. My husband and son were hovering when I opened the package… eager to help me review this time. 😉
Guylian starts things off right with amazing visual appeal. The seahorse shape makes these truffles unique and almost too pretty to eat! The extra dark variety amp it up with lovely seashell shapes. The chocolate coating is smooth and shiny… none of the whitening that indicates stale chocolate. They look as though each piece has been polished. The shape makes them ideal for nibbling.
Cutting into them reveals a creamy and smooth filling. The signature truffles have a deeply-colored hazelnut filling. The white and milk chocolate truffles feature a vanilla filling. The dark chocolate truffles are also filled with a chocolate cream.
I first tried the signature hazelnut flavor. The chocolate is smooth and creamy… literally melting in your mouth. I enjoyed the texture and the taste of the chocolate, but I was not a huge fan of the hazelnut. Hazelnut is not a flavor I encounter often, but I do know that many people love it. I would give this flavor a 3 out of 5 based on my own personal tastes. My husband thought they were very good. He declared them a 4 out of 5 stars.
The white chocolate with vanilla filling tasted much like eating a mouthful of rich, delicious cream. The milk chocolate had much the same effect, but with a hint of cocoa. I’m not normally a huge fan of white chocolate, but the effect here is so smooth that you could truly appreciate the combined flavors. They got a 4 out of 5 stars from both my husband and myself.
The dark chocolate were our favorite of the bunch, by far. I had a hard time sharing these! They feature that sames creamy texture, but with layers of chocolate flavors. A solid 5 out of 5 stars from both of us!
Overall, the Guylian Artisanal Belgian Chocolates would make a wonderful gift for the chocolate fan in your life. They are delicious and pretty and packaged for giving to that someone special. Great for many holidays and birthdays. Valentine’s Day is coming soon, too. 😉
Pros: Delicious, creamy, richly-flavored, and unique chocolates. Perfect gift idea. Reasonably priced for the quality.
Cons: The distinct hazelnut flavor may not be for everyone.
