Personal Experience: At the time I was given the opportunity to review a Shark Rotator Powered Lift-Away Vacuum I had been a faithful Dyson user for over 7 years. You have probably seen many of the commercials… from both sides of the duel… claiming that one vacuum was better than the other. As a long-time Dyson user, I was pretty excited to put the Shark to the test in my own home.

Like with pretty much any modern vacuum, the Shark Rotator arrives as a box of parts and pieces that you need to put together. Unlike my previous experiences with the Dyson and other vacuums, the Shark was actually really easy to put together. I didn’t need any special tools and the instructions were pretty easy to follow. The bulk of it snapped together in just a few minutes. The trickiest part was actually learning what each of the attachments does and how to use them.

The Shark Rotator can be used in three basic configurations with a variety of tools adding lots of variation. The upright mode is what most people are familiar with and the mode I personally used most often. It worked for everyday vacuuming and allowed me to get to just about every inch of the floor. I found the whole unit much more lightweight than my Dyson. It also propelled itself with more force than I was used to… took a few swipes to get accustomed to letting the vacuum do the work. The swiveling motion of the vacuum is really great for angling it into tight spots and around corners in ways I never could with my Dyson, but like with the self-propelling feature, it took a few uses before I truly gained control. It’s so lightweight and powerful that it kind of took off on me a bit those first few uses!

When I needed to get under the furniture or into tighter spots, the second configuration came into play. In this mode, you slip the canister off of the handle and hold it in your hand while the cleaning wand snakes its way into tight spots. I was amazed at how well this worked and it allowed me to get into places I hadn’t touched with a vacuum in a shamefully long time… like under our bed. You see, the Dyson was simply too large to get into those spots and there was no light on it for me to see just how badly the hair and dust was building up. (Yes, we have cats. How’d you guess?!) Our bed frame is a huge pain to move, so it’s really great to finally have a way to get into those spots and deal with the build up much more often.

My only complaint was that the cat hair really builds up easily on the brush. I have to clean it off, with scissors in hand, after every session. It’s great that it’s finally getting this stuff out of our carpet, but it’s adding an extra step to my cleaning process. Fortunately, it does appear that the amount is reducing as it picks up what the Dyson missed and kudos to Shark for designing the brush area in a way that is easy to clean.

The third configuration is like a canister vacuum. The Shark comes with a wheeled stand that you can put the canister while you clean things like the ceiling and furniture. I loved the True Pet attachment! It is a powered head for the wand that is great for cleaning up pet hair. Do you see the third row of pictures in the image above? That last shot of the pile of hair in the trash bin is what this powered head took off of our living room furniture pieces in one cleaning! I vacuumed the furniture every week with my Dyson, but the Shark found more hair than I ever cared to admit was lurking there. Yikes!

The canister configuration was also my favorite way to clean our hard floor surfaces. They include a washable microfiber pad that helps clean as it vacuums. I couldn’t believe what it picked up on a floor that looked clean to my eyes. I grabbed bits of dust and food from the corners and under our appliances and left me feeling like my house was one step closer to the clean I wanted.

Overall, I can’t recommend this vacuum enough! The day my vacuum arrived, I had already vacuumed with the Dyson and the Shark still found a full canister of yuck stuck in each rooms’ carpets. It’s so quiet that my “fraidy cats” actually stayed put as I vacuumed rather than running in terror. It has impressive suction and lots of configurations to make cleaning really easy… all at a price point that’s less than half of what we paid for our Dyson. I wish I’d known about Shark years ago and saved us a ton of money and frustration!

Pros: Great suction. Lightweight. Lots of accessories and configurations to vacuum just about every surface in the house from floor to ceiling and in between. Better than a Dyson at a better price point!

Cons: Little bit of a learning curve with steering. Hair got caught in the brush too easily.

  1. This would be dome awesome gift to receive for Christmas especially with 4 boys in my house. Lol

    • It would definitely come in handy for that!

  2. That is really impressive!

    • I was really surprised… and rather grossed out… to see what it picked up that my Dyson had left behind.
