Personal Experience: PlaSmart has some really great and innovative products and we’ve had a lot of fun playing with their toys in the past. It was an honor to make them a part of this year’s winter holidays gift guide. We were sent a Pirate Adventure Scribble Down to try out and share with you.
Xander loves his pirates, so this kit brought an instant smile. After showing him how it worked, he set out to create his scene. Xander is four, so at the low end of the recommended range for age on Scribble Down. He struggled a bit with providing enough pressure when he scribbled to release the images from their backing paper on to the scene. We used one of the other suggestions of a coin and it gave him a better grip, but I did occasionally have to help reposition the paper and return a peg leg to a pirate. Toward the end of the activity he took to just pointing at where he wanted me to place a character. So, keep in mind that your younger children may need a bit of guidance on this.
I do wish there was a bit more to it… like an extra scene or two sheets of characters to scribble down. At nearly $6 each, it just seems like too little bang for your buck. I would honestly expect two for that price.
Overall though, this is the kind of thing we would have loved to do on road trips when we were young and it’s something I would grab for Xander too. It would also make a great stocking stuffer idea for the holidays. There’s no batteries to run out or headphones needed. They get to be creative in a non-messy way. All they need is hard surface to rest it on and a pen or coin to scribble. If you have a storyteller on your hands like we do, you may even get some fun pirate tales out of it too!
Pros: Easy to do, no mess, and travels easily. Leaves room for creativity.
Cons: Over too quickly for the cost.
