It’s been my wish to make a new and better scarf for Xander. I had made one for him using a variety of blue and grey yarn scraps, but I don’t feel like I made it wide enough. I was at Walmart today and picked up a long-repeat yarn called Mandala. It’s really pretty and under $5 for a cake that is supposed to be enough for an adult scarf. It is an acrylic yarn, which tends to be a bit tough for my sensitive skin to handle. It seems rather soft, so I’m taking a chance. Xander is excited about the colors and the prospect of a new scarf, so I’m really excited to get going on this. I’ll be using my Embossed Knit Scarf pattern.

It’s my first time using a yarn cake and I’m regretting the decision to pull the yarn from the center. It’s collapsing in on itself and I keep getting knotted clumps. I’ll probably end up turning the rest into an easier to manage ball. I’m feeling disappointed in the yarn quality too. I’m about a foot and a half into it and I’ve already had three breaks that were poorly knotted together. It’s a striped scarf, so it won’t be that big of a deal, but the random widths of the stripes… including one that is only two rows wide… is kind of bugging me. I will finish it because Xander likes it as is. I may give this yarn brand one more try to see if this was a fluke, but I wouldn’t count on it.
Finished! I had a few frustrations with the yarn, but overall the finished project is nice. I did break the yarn myself a couple times to avoid huge stretches of one color. The yarn is soft and this pattern always has an awesome squish to it. Xander really likes it and that’s what really matters.
I did end up buying more of this yarn. Xander wants a hat to match the scarf and I’ll be working on a scarf for my mom’s birthday.
