Learning Resources is a great source of games and toys that are both fun and educational. Even the simplest concepts can lead to hours of educational fun. Their Mental Blox game is great for challenging your child’s problem solving skills, but for 2016 they’ve upped the challenge by taking it 3D. We recently had the opportunity to try Learning Resources’ Mental Blox 360° 3-D Building Game for ourselves.
The game consists of 15 brightly colored blocks in different shapes. It also comes with a collection of forty double-sided cards with challenges on the front and solutions on back. The challenge is to use the blocks to match the card. Think of it as a 3D version of tanagram puzzles. It takes careful thought to visualize how the blocks need to be placed, which will help build your child’s critical thinking and spatial reasoning skills. Some of the cards were a much bigger challenge than I expected! They color code them by difficulty, so you can increase the challenge as your child’s critical thinking skills grow.
The blocks are well made. I like little details like a diagram printed in the box for placing the blocks when playtime is over. I do think the price is a bit high. I would have expected wooden, not plastic, at this price range. I think a couple more blocks in the set would extend the gameplay considerably.
Pros: Teaches critical thinking and problem solving skills. Brightly-colored and well made. Three levels of challenge.
Cons: Pricing for material and/or quantity is a little high.
