It’s that time of year again! Do you have a little builder or budding engineer in your life? This is definitely a set of skills I am happy to enhance in our son Xander and toys like Magformers are a great way to do that. The bright colors, easy building, and variety make them a toy kids will go back to again and again.

For those unfamiliar with Magformers, they are a collection of plastic building pieces in a variety of shapes. Each shape has small magnets worked into parts of the edge. The design of the pieces allows for a variety of different applications and shapes. I do find the construction is not as solid as other building-type products because they are held together only by magnets.

A cool thing about Magformers sets is that you can have a lot of fun with any single set, but you can also expand the fun and creativity with additional sets. I love when Xander’s excited about a toy and it is something we can expand on. It gives us extra gift ideas and rewards in the future! 😉

One thing I really like about this Carnival set is that we get the excitement of movement but without the need for batteries. It seems like so many of Xander’s toys need batteries or recharging of some kind. It’s a refreshing change from many of the toys on the shelves this holiday season.

This set requires a bit more finesse than the R/C Cruisers set we’ve reviewed previously. The pieces are smaller and the suggested projects are more difficult. You have to be able to hold some pieces in place while setting another piece in. It was a little frustrating for Xander, but it was a good lesson in patience and perseverance (for us both). 😉

Overall, we really love playing with our Magformers. It’s a toy that comes out to play at least once a week in our house. The endless variety of shapes possible makes them a toy with many uses. We build vehicles, buildings, and even obstacle courses for his model cars. It’s a toy that will appeal to a wide variety of ages and stages. They are on the pricier end of the toy scale in my opinion, but they have proven to be very sturdy with lasting play power.

Pros: Promotes creativity. Easy to use. No batteries! Expandable. Fun for all ages.

Cons: Constructions may not be very stable. Expensive.
