Personal Experience: Colortime sent along one of their Recycle tote bags and three of their fabric markers for us to sample for the purpose of this review. As you’ve probably gathered from previous posts and reviews, my family is not one to turn down the opportunity to be creative and crafty.
The classic “Reduce, Reuse, Recycle” message and a line drawing of Earth adorn this basic canvas tote bag. It’s that canvas that is lightweight but strong… perfect for coloring and for actually using once the project is done. The print is well-defined and slightly raised from the fabric, which makes it easy to keep your marks in place. I did need to put a piece of scrap paper inside the tote bag when I colored, because the markers leaked through a bit. This is completely expected for a project like this and they do remind you in the instructions.
The fabric markers have their ups and downs. The scent is really overwhelmingly strong. I worked on this project on a particularly warm day, so we had the house closed up for the AC. I’d recommend doing this in a well-ventilated area… especially if you have a group of people working on them. I had to take several breaks to walk away. On the up side, the color is vibrant and flows easily. It took me under an hour to finish the entire project with breaks included. The colors dry very fast and seal without heat. In the humidity of the day it took a bit longer for ours to dry completely, but it was ready for farmers market shopping the next day.
All I want to do next is get a letter stencil kit to personalize the back side of the tote with our name or some message about shopping green. I have plenty of life left in my fabric markers!
The prices are incredibly reasonable. This bag was under $5 and the markers will last through a ton of projects. These would be great for parties, reunions, and classrooms. I could see doing these at birthday parties and then the kids get to go home with a really cool party favor that is actually useful. Colortime isn’t limited to tote bags either… they have tees, backpacks, pillowcases, and more. They have designs appropriate for boys, girls, holidays, and even troops!
Pros: Lots of fun projects to choose from. Great company for party and group activities. Heavy printing makes for easy coloring. Markers don’t require heat to set, have vibrant color, and last through a lot of projects.
Cons: Markers stink, but that’s not uncommon for fabric paints.
