Exposed Skin Care contacted me and offered an opportunity to review their skincare line in exchange for my honest and unbiased opinion. As someone who deals with chronic blackheads, I was excited to give it a try… especially once I discovered they combine science and nature to create their products. They have some great information on their ingredients and what each does here.
I was sent six of their core products and the Derm-X cloth to review. I created a daily and weekly routine based on each product’s description and instructions. I’ll share a bit about each product as I explain my routine. There are four products that I used daily, so I’ll start with those, and then tell you about the other two that were each used once a week.
I begin and end each day with the Facial Cleanser. The cleanser has a nice clean, soapy scent. It has a gel-like consistency and very little suds. I may be in the minority, but I love that it doesn’t suds up like crazy, because (a) I know that those suds are usually created by using artificial ingredients and (b) I swear I always get some in my eyes! It feels like a mild soap and I experienced very little drying of my skin. I use the Derm-X cloth a few times a week when I wash my face. The microdermabrasion cloth helps with exfoliating dead skin cells, removing makeup, and even minor scarring. I can feel a difference when I use it versus when I don’t… my face is noticeably smoother.
I immediately follow cleansing with the Clearing Tonic. The tonic is a mild toner-type product and of about the same consistency but without the harsh effects of alcohol-heavy toners. I was a bit surprised that the instructions call for you to apply this with your bare hands, but as I got used to it I found that it helped keep me from overusing the Clearing Tonic and I didn’t waste any in a cotton ball. This was mildly drying, but I expect that from a product containing witch hazel. Oddly enough, my skin actually felt much dryer the day I forgot this step. I love that it uses Green Tea Extract, which heals and protects the skin.
The next two products I use are the Acne Treatment Serum and the Clear Pore Serum. I used the Acne Treatment first thing in the morning and the Clear Pore just before bed every night after the cleanser and tonic. The Acne Treatment has Benzoyl Peroxide to kill bacteria and prevent acne while the Clear Pore has Salicylic Acid to clear clogged pores while you sleep. Doing one in the morning and one at night helps to handle both aspects of acne treatment… prevention and removal… while lessening the chance of drying out the skin in the process. More Green Tea Extract here too to keep skin healthy.
The final two products I use once a week each… one on Monday and one on Thursday. (They can be used twice a week each if needed.) I typically use them in the evenings. The Microderm Scrub has a very mild abrasive texture and works a lot like the cleanser. The abrasion leaves my face feeling so soft after treatment. The Clarifying Mask was about the only product I have any real criticism about. It contains sulfur for killing acne bacteria. The sulfur smell is not too overpowering, but it lingers for far longer than I would have liked. I had to wash my face twice before that scent faded enough to not be annoying. It also left my face very red and tight feeling for at least an hour after. This would be the one product I wold most easily be able to drop from the regimen. It has it’s benefits as part of the line, but I’m just not sure they outweigh the negatives.
The system overall is proving to effectively tackle my problematic blackheads. It’s amazing to see them starting to fade and my pores shrinking. I was also impressed with how quickly it took out a pimple that popped up the day my products arrived. What normally would have stuck around for days was gone the next morning! The combination of products is also improving texture all over my face. I have had other products able to do that, but the “T” zone where my blackheads are would still feel bumpy. Not anymore! Overall, I’m very happy with this system of products and the results I’m getting. I wish my photos above (no retouching and no makeup) better showed the difference that I see everyday, but hopefully the painfully close photos of my nose alone can convince you.
Pros: Balance of science and nature that truly works. Reduced and prevented acne. Healed skin and improved texture. Not overly drying. Most products smell great. Competitive pricing… especially when purchased in kits.
Cons: The Clarifying Mask scent is awful and lingering.
