Personal Experience: It’s a silly thing, but I have wanted one of these style of necklaces since I was a teenager. Unfortunately, any that I would find were not in my name. My parents chose to spell my name with an “o” instead of the more common “a” and so it was not always easy to find things in my name. I jumped at the chance to review the script name necklace, because it was exactly the style I had wanted for so long!

Be warned that they say it can take up to three weeks to get your custom items. I’ll be honest… I’m not a patient person when waiting for something I really want. ;) I placed my order on December 18th and it arrived in my mailbox on January 10th.

The package arrived in a manila envelope. The necklace itself was mostly inside of a plastic baggie stapled to the receipt. I would have preferred to see a bit more care going into the packaging to ensure it arrived safely. I will admit that my necklace did appear to arrive undamaged.

The actual monogram charm looks very nice. The cutting is clean without sharp edges and the design is simple, yet striking. They spelled my name correctly. I like that the font on the design I chose actually resembled my true signature… or at least how it looked before I started scribbling it out. ;) There is a bit of an awkward spot by the “n” that I believe is meant to make the letter stand out more obviously, but it looks a bit like a mistake or chip in the finish. It marred an otherwise nice looking charm.

Around my neck and without closer inspection, the necklace is pretty. I chose the 18″ length and it hangs just right. It is a great everyday piece that I wear often. It is sterling silver, so the metal quality is nice. I have not yet experienced any tarnishing or discoloration. The metal is thin, light, and dainty. It would be the kind of jewelry piece that would go over well as a gift.

I was a bit disappointed when my necklace broke on just the fourth time I wore it. As I was removing it, one of the small jump rings holding the charm to the chain came undone and disappeared into my carpet. Luckily I had extra jump rings and the tools necessary to repair it. The repaired necklace is what you see in my photos here. You may be able to tell that the jump ring over the “a” is slightly larger than on the other side… that’s my repair.

Monogram Online did provide the necklace free of charge in exchange for my opinion, but it didn’t stop me from cringing a bit at the $70 price tag. I have seen similar necklaces in more common names for far less, but it is nice that there is an option out there for those of us with uncommon spellings or unique names. I personally did not find this necklace of a quality to justify the cost. When I asked others to guess at the value, replies ranged from $5 to $15… certainly nowhere near the $70 Monogram Online sells these for. Overall, I was just okay with the necklace. On the merits of the necklace alone, I would give a 3-star rating. The price for something that broke so easily along with the lengthy shipping time and poor shipment packaging pulled away another star.

Pros: Nice design. Visually pretty. Sterling silver.

Cons: Shipping time is lengthy. Custom design gets costly. Not the quality I expected… broke as I was unclasping it.
