I know I’m not the only one that enjoys some music while getting ready in the morning or showering. It can be hard to find a speaker that can handle the moist environment of a bathroom but still provide great sound. Smart Mixture had a solution for me! They sent me their SpeakStick shower speaker to review in exchange for my honest and unbiased opinion.

The SpeakStick is a bit larger than a bar of soap and has a very generously-sized suction cup on the back. It comes in a variety of fun colors. (I chose boring black, because my bathroom is black and mint… but I was really tempted to go with that amazing bright green!) A material that appears to be silicone is in the center of the speaker. This is where you’ll find your controls. They kept it basic here with multi-function buttons… great for when you’re fumbling about in a steamy shower. On the side is a flap that open to place the included mini-USB cord for charging.

Installation went pretty easily. The large suction cup works on smooth surfaces. I did have a bit of trouble getting it to stick in our shower. I’m not really sure if this is a fault of the suction cup or because our tile has a textured surface that doesn’t generally work well with suction cups. Stuck to the wall, the suction would not typically last through a shower. I was able to get it to stick to the rear wall of our soap dish for a longer hold.

The sound is very good! I was impressed with how clear it was and how loud. I could adjust volume both on my phone and the speaker, which allowed me to find the right volume no matter if I was getting in or already in the shower. The acoustics of the shower made it feel like I had surround sound in my bathroom. It was great! I find myself listening to music more often when I take a shower… and sparing my cohabitants from my horrible singing voice.  The silicone material of the buttons was great with wet hands. My fingers could slide over the surface easily and locate the correct button just by touch if need be.

You can accept calls with the SpeakStick, which is great for busy people. It’s probably not a feature I would personally use regularly, but I tested it out for you.  The incoming ringtone surprised me a bit. I don’t know why I expected it to ring with my ringtone! It’s a nice, clear, classic phone tone. The incoming sound was very clear and I could talk easily. Placement of the speaker did seem to matter more when it came to calls. In the middle of the shower or closer to the water made it more difficult for the caller to hear me, but if I had the speaker on the wall furthest from the water I could be heard relatively clearly. Your caller will know you’re in the shower… or hanging out under a waterfall… either way.

This speaker doesn’t need to stay in the shower. It has nice clear sound even away from the strong acoustics of a shower stall. I really like using it outside. It’s nice knowing that a sudden burst of rain will not destroy my speaker.

Overall, I’m very happy with this little speaker. I’m really impressed with the sound quality and great design in a device that sells for around $20!

Pros: Impressive range. Clear sound. Easy to use. Small but powerful. Fun colors. Rechargeable.

Cons: Suction cup wasn’t very effective in our shower.
